Upgrading Firmware in Sun E2900

Recently me and my colleague updated firmware in E2900 to make sure we’ve covered to latest patches and not run into any h/w specific errors.since our SC(System Controller) is not in network. we’ve to download the lom packages, firmware into running machine and update firmware from there. This is what we did.

I’ve downloaded “Netra t Lights Out Management 2.0” from sun download center. transfer them to box and pkg install all of them. as part of them we’ll get a utility called lom. next step is to get the latest firmware for E2900.I downloaded firmware from sunsolve.sun.com. we were on 5.18 and I downloaded 5.21 from. Transfer them to unix and unzip them.you’ll see files with .flash.There are four image types which may need to be transferred using this method with names of the following form:

downloaded zip file would have following flash files. First thing you need to do is read the Install.info file

lw8pci.flash (contains I/O board Local POST)
lw8cpu.flash (contains CPU/Memory Board Local POST and OBP)
sgrtos.flash (contains LOM/SC Real Time Operating System)
sgsc.flash (contains LOM/SC firmware)

update them in following order.
1. # lom -G lw8cpu.flash

This program will replace LOM firmware with version 5.21.1
Are you sure you want to continue?
Enter ‘C’ and return to Continue or anything else to Terminate
C

2. # lom -G lw8pci.flash

This program will replace LOM firmware with version 5.21.1
Are you sure you want to continue?
Enter ‘C’ and return to Continue or anything else to Terminate
C
3. # lom -G sgrtos.flash

This program will replace LOM firmware with version 5.11.3
Are you sure you want to continue?
Enter ‘C’ and return to Continue or anything else to Terminate
C
4.# lom -G sgsc.flash

This program will replace LOM firmware with version 5.21.1
Are you sure you want to continue?
Enter ‘C’ and return to Continue or anything else to Terminate
C

Once all above steps are done. Make sure shutdown your system and poweroff the all the boards then reset sc. after restart of sc and powering on CPU boards. check your firmare version using below commands.

lom>showsc version -v
lom>showboards -v

once everything looks good. you can boot the machine back.
